Mother Tounge

Amy has two kinds of Englishes she speaks one is for with other people and speeches, while the other is for her mother. It was extremely hard for Tan to grow up with her mother’s poor speech; she was angered that people would take advantage of her because of the impartment since she was after all from Asia. It shows us how cold the world can be. The specific audience that is being targeted is the Asian and Anglo communities. She doesn’t want to see the Asian population limit themselves to science and engineering, but to go out and beat the statistics be creative, do the opposite society wants you to do. I feel the Anglos are targeted in this by revealing the cruel things that were done to Amy’s mom. The part when the hospital pretended they lost her CAT scan was really low and Amy had to come to her moms rescue. She also relates to other kids that are in the same boat, not to let society tell them what they can and can not do, which is what Amy over came.

Interesting post, Chris. You hit on a few different audiences that Tan may have intended to address. Do you think, when Tan wrote this, that she was conscious of her "Asian-ness" as it may be presented to an Anglo audience? How might that have affected Tan's writing style for this piece? Just something to consider. No need to respond if you don't want.
